As a beginner, you are probably really excited to get started. Obstacle courses and races will push you to your mental and physical limits and will test your speed, endurance and strength.

You will have to force yourself to finish and you shouldn’t be surprised, even on simpler courses, if you fail to cross the finish line.

Even if you consider yourself a wonderful athlete, obstacle racing will be tough, but worth it.

Columbia Muddy Buddy Ride and Run Series

If you are looking for a fun, yet challenging introduction to the world of obstacle course races, you may want to check out the Columbia Muddy Buddy Ride and Run series.

This is one you will need to do with a partner, but it has a simple layout and relatively easy obstacles. The best part about it, which is why it is great for beginners, is that there is no penalty for skipping an obstacle.

If you don’t want to do it, you can just skip it! This is an obstacle course that is all about fun, as well. Costumes are encouraged and it is meant to be very family friendly.

Rugged Maniac

Another great beginner obstacle course race is the Rugged Maniac.

This one is, of course, tough, but there is a lot of fun involved as well. In fact, many of the participants in this event don’t take it very seriously at all.

Though there are certainly challenging obstacles, at Rugged Maniac, beer is the prize at the end and many of the obstacles are downright fun.

If you think sliding down a mud slide then grabbing a beer sounds like a good time, the Rugged Maniac race may be perfect for you.

Spartan Sprint

This race is a 3.2 mile race and though filled with obstacles, it isn’t known to be as tough as some of the others in the Spartan series. Because 90% of participants finish this race, it is seen as a good race for beginners.

Warrior Dash

Probably the best known entry level obstacle course race, Warrior Dash is proud to be the gateway for people to get into these types of races.

Though it is a 5k race and you will be met with obstacles, the obstacles are designed so that even couch potatoes can get through the race, though not unscathed. More serious athletes tend to do the Warrior Dash for fun and it is known for having a party-like atmosphere.
